MORE AVATAR, PLEEEEASE??

Just finished the last episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Won't spoil you (Ruben will never forgive me if I say anything specific) but OMG. I can't coherently say just how awesome that was. Basta, ang galing! The backgrounds! The animation! I love the battle scenes! And Toph! And Zuko! And Aang! OMG! I loved everything! I must watch it again!

I can't believe it's done. And I can't believe I stayed up until 4am waiting for the bittorrent to get downloaded and then staying up to watch it. =_= I'm so gonna fall asleep while I'm at work later

survived my first week of work, officemates were nice. pissed off because of that freelance thing with kyameel that been taking forever to finish. stupid client takes forever to respond and then passes us to someone who didn't even know that there's a web project going on until i went to their office and asked the guy for approval on the last revision our client told us to do.
even more annoyed with the world because i'm supposed to be out, enjoying my weekend but i can't leave the house! landlord installed a new lock on the gate and nobody gave me my own copy of the damn key. if i leave the house, i'll get locked out later. so there goes my saturday >_<

i'm taking the job, people. wish me luck! at least the night owl in me won't have to adjust that much. now the hard part is telling my paranoid mom when she comes back from her trip that her unica hija will be coming home after midnight everyday for work.

ruben said he's gonna be supplying me with pepper spray again *sigh*

had a job interview kanina, for this company in ortigas. graphic artist position daw. they pulled my resume from jobstreet and called me up late in the afternoon yesterday. i agreed to go to their office tonight (schedule for interview was between 7 to 8pm) for an interview.

okay naman yung kausap ko, she's the hr person/accountant. asked about my job experience, etc. she said she liked my portfolio and made me talk to the creative director guy. he's like the one guy in the manila office, which is kinda understandable because of the nature of the business. anyway, the talk with the creative director was very informal; he just asked about the stuff in my portfolio while we browsed through it and i asked about what kind of responsibilities the graphic artist position entails. oh, and we apparently have a few common acquaintances.

anyway, kaya pala super-late (for office hours) yung interview kasi the manila office has to follow the hours of their american boss, who's in new york. and since the other office (in peru) is also in the same timezone as the boss, they have to adjust and work following the eastern standard time O_o

so after the interview, the hr person talked to me again. she said they really liked my work and that they want to offer me the job na! O_o so i was kinda dumbfounded and asked for time to decide. so now i have until monday to think about this.

so, should i take the job? the pay is higher than my previous job, the job itself isn't that complexicated, i don't have to wake up early and the people seem nice. but on the other hand, i go home at midnight! there goes my social life, the little i have of it anyway... and how will i do freelance stuff now? O_o

Yay for meeting up again with some of the Mafiagang! We met up at Time Zone Glorietta, had a little misadventure looking for Chester's car in 6750 and then piled up in said car (we were 7 people at that time) to have dinner and interesting conversation at Sango. We left Sango at around 10 PM then traipsed to the Fort to meet up with Titam for more conversation, alcohol and live Mafia :D Titam and I were the only girls, surrounded by nine Mafiagang boys (Ruben, Chester, Po, Edge, Jem, Juju, Nikki, Celsus, then later Arnold showed up with his friend Louie), but it was pretty cool. We stayed at Trio until they closed at 2 AM, then headed to the 24-hour Starbucks store in Valero St., Makati (which was really, really near my old office).

We played more Mafia there, after being revived a little by the coffee. The Mafiagang boys described the game mechanics to Arnold (who hasn't played even the online version even if he's on the mailing list) and Louie. I sat out of the last couple of games, since I was really tired from having practically no sleep the other day. When we finally decided to leave, it was 5 in the morning and it took almost 30 minutes for everyone to sort out who's riding with whom, who needs to get dropped off where and for everyone to say goodbye.

Anyway, Ruben didn't have a car so I had to bum a ride with Chester along with Po and Edge. I was kinda worried that my mom (who hasn't realized I'm an adult and can take care of myself) will get all pissy at her errant daughter for coming home very late. But thankfully she's not yet awake to yell at me. I'm expecting a full-out sermon later though so I better get some rest while I can.

PS: About Princess Globehead and the Mangaholix convention. One of the Mafiagang actually knows her and the inside scoop about the bodyguards thing during the recent con. He said it was the convention management who hired the guards, not her mom, as rumors went. So there.

Blog EntrySo I just got back from the province...Jun 1, '08 7:30 PM

... and jumped straight to another anime marathon. This time, i sat through the entire 26 episodes of Ouran High School Host Club. Ruben caught me online in the middle of my marathon so I typing my running commentaries -which consisted of evil laughter when Tamaki's being an idiot (again) and squeeing because of the weird love polygon they have - while i watched. Gah, Tamaki-sempai's so adorkable (a description that also applies to Avatar's Prince Zuko)! Talk about denial about Haruhi! And the twins! Those lovely, lovely and EVIL twins! I found the twincest-y scenes (which Hikaru and Kaoru really ham it up for the fangirls) were hilarious. And shadow king!Kyouya as well! He he, Haruhi of course was a great character, but I think I'm always going to prefer the other Haruhi more. I have nothing against Honey-sempai and Mori-sempai, but I like the rest of the club way more than them.

Gah, and the shipping! Lol, the problem with harems in anime (reverse or otherwise) is that I'm having a hard time deciding if I want Haruhi with Tamaki (which is sorta where they're leaning towards in the ending) or with Hikaru (this one's got potential for Kaoru angst!). It's like that Kyou/Tohru vs. Yuki/Tohru thing with Fruits Basket all over again!

Lol, I really oughta go to bed now XD I'm babbling about fandom stuff in my blog and that's a bad sign already. XD

Next on the list of anime to watch: Full Metal Panic! Xxxholic! And almost a hundred burned DVDs worth more! Maybe I'll try to watch Bleach. Or even Naruto XD

PS: I think this should really be posted in my (woefully bare) reviews section, but I really can't be arsed to change.

It's now down to the typography choice for the logo. The Design Brew guys, Paolo and Randell, are kinda leaving the choice to me. And I need help deciding, because I'm forever stupid when it comes to typography.

I'm kinda leaning towards #3 and #4. Ruben said he liked #2 and #5, but #2's kinda unreadable. Whatcha think?

I finished watching Full Metal Alchemist last weekend! For the first time in months, I went on anime-marathon mode and finished all 51 episodes in 2 days. My head hurt after that but it was so worth it! So I rested my eyes for a couple of days then watched the movie! So now that I've gone completely nuts about FMA, I'm looking for the manga scanlations. Anybody can point me to them?

Blog Entryrusty design skills, oy vey...May 24, '08 8:07 AM
for everyone
Currently working out logo studies for something a couple of guys and I are cooking up. Just coming up with a name took a couple of hours of brainstorming on my part before the actual discussion with the rest of the guys (and that took a little more than a couple of hours). So now I'm tasked with coming up with the logo and website design.

With almost a year of not designing things for a living, I'm a little overwhelmed and nervous. My design skills are mucho rusty, in my opinion. O_o So I spent the greater part of today website-hopping and looking for design inspiration. I've got a couple of ideas after the initial discussion, but they seem kinda stale in my head. Looking at other designers' works is sorta not helping, in the sense that I'm getting even more nervous. I want my design to be effective and good enough for whatever confidence my partners-in-crime have in me to be justified.

*sigh* I really hate this kind of pressure, even when it's self-inflicted.

Addendum: Hey, design people reading my blog! Gimme more links for design inspiration!

Rules:
- each blogger starts with ten random facts/habits about themselves
- bloggers tagged need to write on their on blog about their ten things and post the rules.
- at the end of your blog you need to choose 10 people you`re going to tag and list their names.
- dont forget to comment on their site that they`re tagged.

Fact/Habit:
1. Hiyas has never tried smoking.
2. Hiyas names her electronic gadgets: Darcy the iPod nano, Sylar the cellphone, Laurie the laptop.
3. Hiyas has one fictional crush that never abated: Fitzwilliam Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)
4. Hiyas once had nightmares for a few days straight after watching the movie version of Stephen King's "It". It didn't help that she never liked clowns.
5. Hiyas first tried to use oil paints on the summer before sixth grade. She hasn't touched her oils since college.
6. Hiyas used to be much sweeter, her mother complains. Hiyas points out that she was also much more naive then.
7. Hiyas was given a couple of joints on her eighteenth birthday. She unrolled the first one and scattered it among her potpourri. Her uncle asked for the other one.
8. Hiyas doesn't care much about videogames. She is baffled why she's surrounded with gamers (her brother, boyfriend, more than half of her friends)
9. Hiyas has a thing for British accents (and actors).
10. Hiyas tends to talk about herself in the third person singular. But that one's pretty obvious.

the problem with being above average for most of your life is that nobody notices you're frail until you end up disappointing someone.

maybe that's why settling for mediocrity has such a big appeal.

Well, this strip applied to me up to a month ago, but I'm not so emo these days, thank goodness.

"Manos" The Hands of Fate = GAH! @_@ The pain doesn't lessen so much on the second screening. Thank goodness for the snark provided by Joel and the robots on MST3K

Apparently, I can concentrate better when I work on stuff away from the house. Lol, looks like I might be hanging out in Gateway more often while doing freelance stuff. Thank goodness Laurie doesn't weigh too much (less than 3kg, which is half of Ruben's laptop's weight).

I need exercise. Any suggestions?

I'm Your Moon

They invented a reason
That’s why it stings
They don’t think you matter
Because you don’t have pretty rings
I keep telling you I don’t care
I keep saying there’s one thing they can’t change

I’m your moon
You’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Let them shuffle the numbers
Watch them come and go
We’re the ones who are out here
Out past the edge of what they know
We can only be who we are
It doesn’t matter if they don’t understand

I’m your moon
You’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Who you were
Long before
They said you weren’t
Anymore

Sad excuse for a sunrise
It’s so cold out here
Ice and silence and dark skies
As we go round another year
Let them think what they like, we’re fine
I will always be right here next to you

I’m your moon
You’re my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it’s the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

People probably get slightly surprised when I tell them about my Catholic School girl days. I mean, I don't go to church, I don't pray (not in the prescribed way anyway), I have a rather dirty mouth (and mind), I disagree with a lot of the Catholic Church's stand on various issues, and I question the need for organized religion. I'm not exactly the poster child for Catholicism. Heck, I'm nowhere near being the poster child for being a good Christian.

My grandmother always says that most of my problems (and my family's problems) can be traced to my lack of faith. In her opinion, my family's fractured (or at least stayed that way) because we don't go to church and hear the Word of the Lord. Yes, I could have avoided all that angst about having to choose which parent to live with, all that confusion on why did my parents split up if I had gone to church and remained a good Catholic. Yes, God decided to punish (or test) me by making my parents decide to end their marriage. Can you see me rolling my eyes now?

I don't think any of my problems now can be traced to the fact that I'm not religious. I mean, I don't blame God for the choices I and others have made (and what's the point anyway? Didn't He give humans free will after all?) I'm not religious because I don't see the point of organized religion. Will God not listen to me because I'm not in the church, with my head bowed and my hands clasped together in prayer? Will I not be saved because I think it's right for women to have a choice with their bodies, or to use condoms or contraceptive pills? Will I burn in Hell for thinking that the Catholic Church is half of the time talking bull anyway?

It's just that I don't understand the need for all these rituals anyway. But I can understand that some people find comfort in rituals, in going to church, in abstinence because it's Easter. It's just that I don't get it why people find the need to tell me how to practice my faith, or to tell me I'm faithless because I'm not religious. Can't I talk to God, in my own way? Can't I just try be a good person everyday, rather than be a good Catholic and waste an hour or so every Sunday?

So, remember me asking for advice regarding laptops? Well, after much debate about models and the whole Mac-versus-PC dilemma and planning on how I can even afford the damn thing, I finally got my laptop!

I was complaining to my mother about my computer and telling her my plan of getting a credit card to finance a laptop a couple of weeks ago.  She didn't like the idea of getting a credit card, saying that we have really high interest rates here and that she could probably ask one of her friends based in Hong Kong if he could canvass and buy a laptop for me. According to her, it would be cheaper to get the laptop there. So she emailed her friend and said friend agreed to charge the laptop on his credit card and bring it to the Philippines when he goes here. Kuya helped me look for a good model that wouldn't cost me several limbs to pay.

After emailing my mom's friend for a while, he was able to buy me my laptop Tuesday this week, before the shops closed for Holy Week. And last night, he arrived with my brand new Lenovo Y310a. Me being, well, me, have decided on a name to dub the new laptop with:  Laurie, after Laurie in Little Women (one of my first literary crushes) and Hugh Laurie (you can roll your eyes in exasperation now XD)

I'm going to be poor for the next how many months, but at least I have a working computer now :D
